Plan a dining room that works beyond mealtimes

Start with how many people you seat each day and the space around the table. Measure the room with chairs pulled out, allowing a clear route to doors, cupboards and the kitchen. Check the delivery route as well as the furniture's final position.

Choose a table around your room

Compare the tabletop dimensions, leg positions and the space underneath before choosing your dining table. A round table can soften a room's layout, while a rectangular design can suit a longer space. The shape alone does not determine seating capacity: check the product measurements against the chairs you plan to use.

For a live-edge or natural wood design, look at the finish and the individual grain as well as the overall shape. Natural variation is part of the look; check the chosen product's material and care details before ordering.

Pair the chairs with the table

Check seat height against the underside of the tabletop, and allow for any apron or support rails. Armrests need clearance if you want chairs to tuck underneath. Compare the width of your dining chairs with the usable space between the table legs, rather than dividing the table length alone.

Get counter seating at the right height

Bar stools and counter chairs are not all the same height. Measure from the floor to the underside of your counter, then check the selected stool's seat height, width and footrest. Leave space to sit down and get up without obstructing the walkway.

Keep the everyday things close

A sideboard or cabinet gives tableware and serving pieces a place near the table. Check usable shelf space and door or drawer clearance. Choose the depth around your room's walking routes, leaving the top for a lamp or a few favourite pieces.

Set the mood around the table

Consider lighting alongside the table position and ceiling height. Check fitting dimensions, installation requirements and dimming compatibility on the chosen product. Wall art or a mirror can finish the room without taking up floor space.
